Sebek, Loud

There is a common theme of characters asking Sebek to keep his voice down, with nearly 30 examples here including Silver, Ace, Jack, Eliza, Grim, Riddle, Deuce, Lilia, Jamil, Floyd, Trey, and Malleus.

Sebek shares that he actually has superior hearing to humans due to his fae lineage and Grim asks, “Then why are you always shoutin’ like that…?”

Ruggie also has a voice line asking why Sebek is so loud and Silver explains, “It’s his way of hiding his embarrassment and expressing gratitude. He may come off as abrasive, but he’s actually very caring.”

Silver also says that Sebek’s shouting always wakes up everyone in Diasomnia, while Malleus goes to Ramshackle in Book 6 in order to escape him (Lilia: “He is rather loud, isn’t he? His voice booms even when expressing concern.”)

Ace repeatedly comments on Sebek’s loudness in a vignette where Sebek chastises the members of his group for being too quiet: “What does it matter how loud we are? It’s not like shouting’ll solve anything.”

The other students are unimpressed by Sebek’s penchant for making their class assignment about working hard for Malleus, but after they shout at him in frustration they reflect, “I think yelling actually made me feel more energized…I think I kinda get why you’re always so loud.”

During Book 7 Lilia will also comment on how loud Baul is, so this is possibly a trait that Sebek inherited from his grandfather.

When Idia asks Sebek to stop shouting during the Harveston event Sebek declares, “I AM NOT SHOUTING! THIS IS A NORMAL VOLUME!”

Jade shares the “fun fact” that yelling can trigger avalanches on snowy mountains but Idia calls this “a load of unscientific nonsense. Human voices are barely a whisper as far as Mother Nature’s concerned.”

Later, however, Sebek does trigger an avalanche by calling for Epel, surprising Idia. (Jade: “Sounds like people yelling and causing avalanches isn’t unscientific nonsense now, is it?”)

There is a running joke of Sebek reacting to others being loud such as during Book 7 and again during Deuce’s birthday vignette, where Sebek claims that he does not raise his voice unnecessarily, to Deuce’s confusion.
