Sebek, Magic, Cold and Egypt

In a vignette Sebek says that he knows he must learn how to wield his magic more precisely, and, “I constantly practice, and yet…”

In a voice line he says that he was “a late bloomer in term of magical talent”, and in his dorm uniform vignette Lilia tells Silver that he suspects Sebek was very uncertain about whether he’d be able to attend NRC at all in the year between Silver’s admittance to the school and Sebek’s own enrollment, as having a sense of magic is “essential” to enrollment, but Sebek’s magic was very late in appearing.

This is referenced in a voice line by Sebek himself who says he “diligently trained for the entire year before I was admitted here. After all, I had every confidence that I would get in.”

Silver says he remembers how shocked Sebek had been when, between the two of them, Silver became capable of using magic first.

In the Vargas Camp event Sebek claims that “humans are weak indeed it his minor chill is too much for them”. When Ruggie asks if he doesn’t mind the cold, Sebek answers “I’m simply better trained than mere humans”.

In the Harveston and Fairy Gala IF events, however, we learn that Sebek actually minds the cold very much.

Jade and Epel both comment on Sebek being adverse to the cold, while Sebek has a voice line about possibly finding a hat similar to his Apple Pom outfit, due to how warm it is.

Sebek reluctantly confesses “I do not fare well in cold weather” to the Harveston group soon after they arrive, saying, “No matter how hard I train myself, I simply cannot overcome it.” (Jade: “I never knew you had such a weakenss.”)

We are reminded of this multiple times during the event, with Sebek taking pleasure in a bonfire and denying that he is shivering from the cold prior to the race: “I’m simply trembling with anticipation for our victory!”

In a birthday vignette Sebek confesses to Ace that he once struggled to get out of bed in the mornings due to the cold, explaining one particular incident where he fell back asleep even after drinking coffee and did not wake up until noon that will be a stain on his honor for life.

Sebek explains that he experimented with various ways to overcome the misery of cold mornings and has since discovered the perfect solution: a hot water bottle that he received from his father, who had relied on it as a way to keep warm without magic after first arriving in Briar Valley.

During Fairy Gala IF Riddle says, “His nose was visibly running, yet he refused to accede to our simple request. His stubbornness is a headache even at club meetings,” and Sebek has a voice line talking about how the school’s greenhouse is “the perfect spot to relax in” because it “is so wonderfully warm and humid”.

This is possibly a connection to Sebek’s “crocodile” nickname: Leona, Rook and Floyd all refer to him as some variation of “crocodile”.

While we do not know what Rook and Leona based their nicknames on, Floyd seems to call him “croc” for the first time to his face during Vargas Camp when Sebek has the idea of catching the Vargas-monster by luring it into a swamp.

This is possibly in reference to the Egyptian god “Sebek” (sometimes also spelled “Sobek”).
