Sebek’s Memory, Strength and Self-Confidence

Sebek has a very good memory. Both Trey and Silver compliment him on having “a good memory for minor details” when he is able to memorize the wording of an invitation and recalls seeing Malleus eating French fries with ketchup. Sebek says, “This is critical information for ensuring that Malleus has a pleasant daily life!”

During Halloween we see that he is capable of singing part of an obscure opera that he saw only once as a child. He says, “I still remember that song because it gave me such a fright as a child.”

During Vargas Camp Sebek recites information about lanternblossoms and magestones, earning Riddle’s praise.

Sebek explains that every day he studies until he grows tired and then performs physical training, as “exercise helps to stimulate the brain and improve memory retention!…I can memorize three days’ work of History of Magic material at once.”

Sebek seems to be, physically, very strong, saying that he trains daily so that he may protect Malleus and that, “It is usually my duty to carry large objects in Diasomnia”. During Vargas Camp Riddle comments on Sebek’s brute strength as they set up their tent, when he strides through the mud of a swamp “like it’s not even there” and when he scales a sheer cliff.

Sebek seems very self-confident, particularly during Vargas Camp where he says things like, “I have every confidence in my ability to excel beyond all others!”. Interacting with the player during the event, Grim observes, “There ain’t a tunnel big enough for this guy’s ego”.

Sebek marches into a strange swamp despite Riddle’s warnings, saying, “Spare me your human concerns. I’m not fool enough to let a paltry bog ensnare me”, and argues against abandoning the camp during the Vargas-monster attack as, “that is clearly our worst option…basic deductive reasoning should’ve told you that.”

Riddle calls him out on his condescending tone and Sebek defends himself with, “Excuse me? I said nothing that was incorrect. I was merely stating the facts!” (possibly tying into the fan-theory that Sebek is based on the Sword of Truth)

While attacking the mine monster at the end of the event, he insists that he will take out the creature on his own after declaring, “Weaklings, the lot of you. If you cannot muster any valor, then stand back before you get hurt!”

This confidence hurts his credibility in the end, however, when Riddle and Silver will not believe that he fought a monster at all after he describes it as “a complete and utter pushover”. Sebek declares he wants to report back to Malleus and Lilia instead, as “they would give me the benefit of the doubt!”

He has a voice line saying, “I learned all of this in middle school. Briar Valley is superior even in its educational curriculum”, insinuating he performs well in some classes, but he also says he is “not good with subjects like art. I prefer curriculum with clear problems and solutions.”

We get many examples throughout the game of Sebek’s apparent self-confidence: he says that the prefect should be astounded by the rapidity of his personal development and explains that he has overcome his aversion to bitter vegetables because he can overcome any hardship.

When Ortho tells Sebek “I’m glad you’re here!” during Fairy Gala IF Sebek responds, “You should be.”

He also declares that he will be taking first place in the Harveston race, crush anyone who challenges him during New Years and after explaining why he can understand a dialect of fae he follows with, “ARE YOU NOT IMPRESSED?”

Deuce tells him that “Having confidence is fine and all, but you shouldn’t make things harder for others. That’s just being obnoxious,” and other characters also comment on how condescending Sebek can sound such as Grim, Ace (multiple times), Jack, Leona, Vil, Azul, Idia and Trey.

Examples we have seen include Sebek declaring his superiority over others during Fairy Gala IF, Harveston, and New Years, while during Book 7 he calls Grim and the prefect “the bottom of the Class A barrel.”

It is possible that Sebek’s supposed self-confidence is hiding insecurity: Lilia says he suspects Sebek was “terribly anxious” until receiving his acceptance letter to NRC, as his magic manifested late and he might have question if he was a worthy enough mage to attend the school.

Lilia explains, “He’s a calm, clever boy… when Malleus isn’t involved, that is. So l’m certain he could objectively evaluate his own magic.”

Silver says that Sebek had been devastated when Silver’s magic manifested first, and Lilia says that Sebek compensated for his delayed magic with smarts and stamina, working doggedly to improve the skills he had: “I suspect that training is what really got him here. You won’t find many people as hardworking as he. Sebek’s conviction is a powerful thing indeed.”

Grim asks about Sebek’s yelling and Silver says, “It’s his way of hiding his embarrassment and expressing gratitude. He may come off as abrasive, but he’s actually very caring.”

Other characters pick up on Sebek’s hidden insecurity during Glorious Masquerade when he refuses to admit that he prefers coffee with milk and sugar: Riddle asks why he is so defensive, saying it is nothing to be embarrassed about, while Jamil says “Not everything has to be a point of pride.”

He also denies when his stomach growls, claiming that his interests are the same of those of his senpai, such as studying history. There is a similar happening during Lilia’s farewell party and at the citadel in Lilia’s dream where he again denies that his stomach is growling, possibly out of embarrassment.

When Epel comments on his shivering during Harveston he denies it (“I’m simply trembling with anticipation for our victory!”) and he also denies having any love for his plushie (“It’s not what you think!”)

There is a similar example during Fairy Gala IF when Jack says he came across Sebek “pacing nonstop in front of Ramshackle’s gate…He kept glancing at the dorm all sneaky-like while going back and forth.”

Sebek is reluctant to explain himself and Ortho says that Sebek must have been worried about them, which he staunchly denies: “I thought you deserved to know how foolhardy your plan was. Don’t mistake my intentions. I am NOT here to help!”

Riddle, too, comments on Sebek’s curious participation in the event (when Riddle requested his help at the start Sebek had soundly refused) and Sebek defends himself with, “I came to demand they do better.” This claim is undermined by Ortho’s follow-up that he has been brainstorming and running errands with them, making Sebek look uncomfortable.

Sebek is motivated to weed fire lotuses during Glorious Masquerade because he refuses to be outdone by humans.

Ortho records his birthday interview for his family and teases Sebek, his interviewer, about making himself look bad on camera to Malleus.

Sebek responds, “What manner of blunder do you imagine l’d make? I could interview you in my sleep.” When Ortho thanks him at the end he says, “What sort of interviewer would I be if I didn’t offer you badly needed wisdom?”

Sebek says he never passes up a rigorous training opportunity, and he is not very enthused to learn that the Harveston sled race involves sleds pulled by plushies: “That isn’t quite the rugged racing experience I envisioned.”

During Harveston he does push-ups, stretches, running, squats and drawing water from a well for exercise by 6am, encouraging Idia to join him (Idia refuses).

He says he is always awake early for training as “a little exercise will shake off any drowsiness” and also invites Grim to join him (Grim refuses).

He observes that going up and down the stairs of the bell tower at Noble Bell College “could make for an excellent training regimen.”

Sebek says that he did not have any stuffed animals as a child because he grew out of “such childishness” one month after he was born: “Though I did hug a sandbag while I slept. Exercise equipment were my toys when I was a toddler.”

When Epel encourages the team to take regular breaks to stay on top of their game Sebek insists on utilizing every second they have to practice for the Harveston sled race.

When Jade recommends they do one last thing before bed, Sebek suggests a pre-bedtime workout.

Sebek has a voice line of, “I despise whining. Adversity is our greatest form of nourishment! Without pain, there can be no gain!”

Sebek says that he trains “most assiduously” every day and Lilia says he demands much of both himself and others.

Silver says that after Malleus and Lilia enrolled at NRC Sebek’s training regimen became more rigorous than ever before, and he would stare at Silver’s acceptance letter with “that same stern look he gets when training.”

When the members of his group for a class project express concern that Sebek will not be able to use a specialty spell for their group assignment Sebek responds, “I spend my days practicing a vast breadth of spells!,” and his reasoning for not wanting to make friends with the other first-year students is that he already has more than enough training partners between Silver and their fellow Diasomnia students.

During Book 7, however, Sebek comments that his “lack of real-world experience is painfully apparent.”

Sebek says that a training exercise in his practical magic class is “intriguing,” as he would have struggled in a simply test of magical prowess but he has “AMPLE experience fighting people” and the target of the task was to attack a dummy that was designed to mimic a person.

Deuce says that Sebek was possible the only one to destroy it in one hit.

The Harveston event is a busy time for Sebek: he chops a month’s wood of firewood for the assembly hall and then volunteers to chop more for Epel’s family. A villager asks him to see to their woodpile as well and he concedes (“I see the humans in Harveston are woefully out of shape”).

After chopping wood at a fifth house Sebek says that he has chopped all the wood in the neighborhood but he still has energy to burn, and ends up taking a crate of apples to the local market (“It never ceases to amaze me how you find such basic tasks difficult…”)

Back at Diasomnia Sebek reflects, “I suppose l’d go back if Epel invited me again. SOMEONE has to chop wood and help out in the orchards.”

Sebek also mentions clearing snow at the school being great training.

During Port Fest he drags his food stall’s candy machine to Idia so that he can repair it.

According to Jade, Sebek has expressed interest in testing himself against the son of a god known for their superhuman strength.
