Silver and Friendship

Silver says that he is grateful for his friends, and when asked what stuck out to him when he enrolled at NRC he responds, “all the friends I made,” as the only person his own age in Briar Valley was Sebek.

Dylla refers to him as an unusually calm friend of Deuce.

Silver says that he sometimes gets his friends to cut his hair.

Silver says that he has animal friends and tells a story about a time he made friends with a bear, while Kalim says that Silver is friends with birds.

Kalim also comments on Silver being “a nice guy who cares about his friends.” Silver says that Kalim is a dear friend to him.

In Book 7 Silver refers to the group of Kalim, Grim, Sebek, the Prefect and Idia as his friends.

Silver shares a story of a time when Ruggie took him to a restaurant, where he saw a number of other NRC students gathered together at a table.

Despite specifying that they were all people that he didn’t actually know, by the end of the story Silver is referring to them as “friends” (and Ruggie is in the room at the time) so he may adhere to a more surface-level interpretation of the word (like Kalim) than characters like Jamil and Idia, who are more selective about whom they are willing to refer to as friends.

Other examples of this are Silver’s insistence that Leona and Malleus are friends (despite Leona repeatedly denying it) and how he refers to the prefect and the other housewardens as friends of Malleus.
