Silver, Jade and Deuce

There is a recurring pattern of Jade feeding Silver: after bringing home mushrooms from a visit to the mountains that Floyd refuses to eat, Jade donates them the cafeteria where they are incorporated into a risotto, which is Silver’s favorite food.

Jade overhears Silver expressing sincere amazement at the deliciousness of the dish and saying, “Whoever their food supplier is, they’ve got quite an eye for quality.”

When Floyd asks why Jade is “grinning like an idiot” to himself Jade explains, “I just found a new low-key source of enjoyment.”

Jade again ends up with too many mushrooms—this time cultivated by hand—and Azul recommends that he sell them to the cafeteria. Jade goes on the look-out for Silver the next day, and we learn that Silver has been having the risotto every day, “hoping to find that flavor again.”

Silver describes the newest dish as even better than the first and tries to share it with Lilia, while Jade watches.

In another vignette we see Silver attend a party thrown by Kalim where he eats a dish that has been made with an icicle mushroom that Jade cultivated and traded to Sam during Beanfest. Jade says, “I bet whoever grew it must be overjoyed to see it put to good use”. Eating alone, Silver says, “This’s good food…especially that mushroom.”

During Jade’s second birthday vignette Silver gifts him with a rope to use during his Mountain Lovers Club excursions. In the Wish Upon a Star event Silver and Deuce discover that they were both raised by single parents when Silver wishes for his father to have a long life.

Deuce’s mother calls him during the event while Silver is guiding him through Diasomnia to collect stars. When Deuce says that his old friends would make fun of him for being so close with his mother, Silver responds, “It’s only natural you’d want to talk regularly with someone you care about.”

Silver explains that when he was a child, Lilia told him that “Human lives are fleeting! There’s no time to bemoan your inexperience!”.

Silver says this means that time spent complaining would be better spent training and that, while he carries those words in his heart, he is pretty sure that Lilia has forgotten he ever said them.

At the end of the event both Silver and Lilia appear to congratulate Deuce on dealing with bullies who had been looking to sabotage the ceremony, and Lilia says he finds Deuce’s passion to be quite inspiring. In his second birthday vignette Silver says that he would want Deuce to be his little brother because of how Deuce treasures his relationship with his mother: he would want to be siblings with someone who puts just as much importance on familial ties as he does.

He says he also likes how Deuce always greets him with so much energy when they meet in hallways or on a sports field and how Deuce is always trying his best.

Silver says that having Deuce as a little brother might help Silver himself improve as a person.

Much like Deuce, Silver also seems particularly grateful to be attending NRC, saying that he is “glad to have an opportunity for such growth” at the school and he is “grateful to attend classes” within the hallowed halls of such an historic institution as NRC.
