Silver, Risotto and Jade

Silver’s favorite food is risotto, which he says he likes because it is simple to make. It was also the first dish he ever made without help, and we see him make it for Lilia in Book 7.

Silver seems to eat the school cafeteria’s risotto often, and sometimes including mushrooms that once belonged to Jade: after bringing home mushrooms from a visit to the mountains that Floyd refuses to eat, Jade donates them the cafeteria.

Jade overhears Silver expressing sincere amazement at the deliciousness of the mushroom risotto dish and saying, “Whoever their food supplier is, they’ve got quite an eye for quality.”

When Floyd asks why Jade is “grinning like an idiot” to himself Jade explains, “I just found a new low-key source of enjoyment.” J

ade again ends up with too many mushrooms—this time cultivated by hand—and Azul recommends that he sell them to the cafeteria.

Jade goes on the look-out for Silver the next day, and we learn that Silver has been having the risotto every day, “hoping to find that flavor again.”

Silver describes the newest dish as even better than the first and tries to share it with Lilia, while Jade watches.

In another vignette we see Silver attend a party thrown by Kalim where he eats a dish that has been made with an icicle mushroom that Jade cultivated and traded to Sam during Beanfest.

Jade says, “I bet whoever grew it must be overjoyed to see it put to good use”.

Eating alone Silver says, “This’s good food…especially that mushroom.”

During Jade’s second birthday vignette Silver gifts him with a rope to use during his Mountain Lovers Club excursions.

(Silver: “The store where I got it didn’t offer gift wrapping, so it’s not the nicest-looking present…” – Jade: “That explains why it’s wrapped in brown paper with a ribbon tied around it.”

Jade is delighted by his gift, and Silver volunteers to help him with ropework whenever he needs it.
