Riddle, Deuce and Jack are in the school library before class. There is a flash of light and an unidentifiable object falls down from the sky and is caught by Kalim, who falls into the library from the window.
The library can suddenly no longer be opened from the outside or inside and invisible walls keep the students from being able to exit through the windows or the roof. Crowley’s magic, Grim’s flames and Vargas’ brute force all fail to rescue them, while objects cannot be passed to the outside from within.
Trein identifies the unknown object that fell from the sky as a lantern, and the symbol on it as the same emblem from the tale of the Princess in the Tower. Riddle suggests that they try to escape the library by becoming princesses and emulating her behavior.
There is one window through which objects can be passed which Crewel uses to supply the students with new outfits and ingredients for hair-growth potions, but Riddle is the only student to brew the potion properly.
Vargas provides the students with rope to follow the princess’ routine of climbing. He says, “Maybe you don’t need any rope. After all, the princess didn’t use any. Instead, she used her long, lovingly maintained—“ but is interrupted by Crowley.
Riddle, Jack, Kalim and Deuce follow emulate the princess by reading, sewing, playing hide-and-seek, cleaning, exercising, using magic to do laundry and painting a wall of the library. Cater and Lilia provide them with a guitar and lessons, while Idia and Ortho give them crossword puzzles.
They receive cookies to decorate from Trey and an unspecified object from Ace, as well as a darts set.
Jade and Floyd teach them how to play pranks while Azul provides them with a chameleon puppet for ventriloquism, as “the story (they) read claimed the princess performed convincing ventriloquism to appear as though she was conversing with a puppet.“
They make candles, receive clay pottery clay from Sebek and Malleus, a chessboard from Leona.yarn and needles from Epel for knitting and ballet shoes from Rook.
When the door still will not open they procure the mystery item that they received from Ace: a frying pan.
Riddle explains, “the Princess in the Tower used a frying pan on a strapping young thief and locked him in a closet,” and they lock Jack in a broom closet to recreate the scene.
Riddle then suggests that the princes may have escaped the tower through the window, realizing what it was that Vargas had been about to tell them: she used her hair.
Riddle uses his hair to help the other three students escape but refuse to follow suit as Crowley forbid them from climbing out the window and he refuses to break any rules.
Deuce points out that, in accordance with a Heartslabyul rule about croquet, he is required to have tea served to him by Trey before midnight. Riddle still refuses (“I’ve made up my mind. I shall never do so”), but Deuce insists that “upholding the rules means coming out of the library and helping (them( finish everything (they) have to do” so that they can they can then go back to Heartslabyul to have tea served by Trey.
This convinces Riddle, who decides that there is technically no school rule against leaving through a library window and dorm rules must take precedence over verbal commitments. Privately, Riddle reflects, “I never thought l’d jump out a window. I’ve been determined never to do that again, ever since I got caught playing with Trey and Chenya,” possibly insinuating that his reluctance is more so from a promise to his mother than from the rule set by Crowley.
Riddle says, “So for today, for this moment…you’ll understand, won’t you, Mother?”
Riddle joins the rest of the students on Main Street, where they dance together to fulfill another part of the princess’ story.
It is revealed that, thanks to Sam convincing everyone that the dorms are in competition with one another, NRC’s students have all been making lanterns to release into the night sky to comply with the fairy tale.
Crowley procures a boat for that must be returned within one hour. Silver, having been called by Riddle, appears with Vorpal, Riddle’s horse from the Equestrian Club stables.
Riddles rides Vorpal to the wharf and sends off the signal for the rest of NRC’s students to release their lanterns and there is a flash in the sky: the same flash they saw at the beginning of the event.
Crowley calls Riddle on his phone to let him know that the invisible wall around the library is gone and the doors are opening normally again.
Riddle tells Deuce that now they can enjoy a hot cup of tea that Trey is going to serve them: “As housewarden of Heartslabyul, I must adhere to the rules. That’s the whole reason I took the plunge into the outside world.”
