“I have always loved Disney, so when I heard about the auditions for the game I thought, ‘I’d love to be a part of that!’.
Of all the roles available, Floyd was the one I wanted the most. I wanted to play a character that no one knew what he was thinking, and I poured all of my experience as a performer into my own version of Floyd.
I tried to create an atmosphere that was unsettling while still leaving a cute impression, along with a variety of the other aspects of the character. During auditions I tried to over-exaggerate and sound dark and crazy, but during the recording I was instructed to sound less scary, so I tried to tone it down.
I finally worked out what it is that is cute about Floyd, then increased the coolness percentage a bit, and it was settled.
I feel that the roller coaster-like drops, such as the sudden change from infant-like to intellectual, is what makes Floyd so appealing. The changes in the weight of his reactions (e.g., ‘Little shrimp!’) are very interesting to portray.
I like that the three members of Octavinelle are equals. I like their relationship, and how it is never just the two of them obeying Azul.
Jade and Floyd have a lot of overlap in the game, but recordings are basically solo, so I am not able to talk to Jade. But Komada-san, who portrays Jade, plays the character so well that I can get a sense of ‘this is how Jade would say this part’ just by hearing his voice once. I am very grateful for that.
If you haven’t played the game yet, please try completing the first book, because the story is just so interesting. I am sure you will be hooked. I can’t help but look for the hidden Mickeys. I got Floyd’s SSR card in the opening and I thought, ‘It’s fate!’ By the way, my hair parts left to right, just like Floyd! (laughs).”
