Vil says that Kalim is “a spudling who could charitably be described as positive, and less so as ignorant and shallow,” comments on how he is “always dashing about and making a mess of himself. He doesn’t seem to realize people are watching his every move,” and during the Cloudcalling event has two instances of whispering to Leona about Kalim, asking if Leona invited him along and later questioning Leona’s judgement when he adds Kalim to their team.
When Leona suggests the strategy of Kalim taking his opponent by surprise to compensate for his lack of strength Vil observes, “hard to imagine Kalim actually pulling anything like that off, even if he wanted to.”
Vil invades Lilia and Kalim’s room during the event, calling them out on the rudeness of “singing in the dead of night.” (Vil: “if you ruin any more of my beauty sleep, there will be DIRE repercussions!”)
It is Vil who wakes up Kalim from his dream in Book 7 by pointing out that it would have been easier for him to find friends other than Jamil, saying, “Your defiance of logic, your stubborn refusal to give up, your insensitive positivity…those are what make you who you are—and those are what make you so fearsome, Kalim.”
When Vil points out that he has more reason to be ashamed than Kalim for the content of his dream Kalim agrees and Vil responds, “This is exactly what I’m talking about!” in reference to Kalim’s insensitivity.
When Kalim agrees to help the group of Book 7 before understanding the situation Vil says, “you should REALLY stop making casual commitments without knowing what they involve.”
