Leona invites Lilia and Vil to Savanaclaw to discuss their potential participation in the Cloudcalling event’s tournament, to their annoyance, with Vil saying he would have ignored the summons if Jack hadn’t gone to get him.
Everyone gathered laughs aloud at the thought of Leona giving lessons to others on rules, best practices and etiquette for guarding king and country, with Vil telling him “do your job, you cretin.”
When explaining why he chose Vil for the team Leona says, “Plenty of strong folks in the academy, but most are pretty stubborn. Set in their ways. But when it comes to good sense and moderation, Vil’s the best housewarden we’ve got.” He also says that they are “friends who know each other well,” but Vil is not impressed by his sarcasm and refuses the invitation.
Leona manages to convince him to join anyway by offering to escort him to an exclusive location at Ivory Springs that is normally only open to the royal family. (Vil: “You must promise me a good time.” – Leona: “I’ll show you the time of your life.”)
Vil later comments that he wishes he hadn’t been so easily played by Leona.
When Grim, Kalim, the prefect and Lilia join in on dancing at a restaurant only Vil and Leona stay behind, commenting on the dancers.
Vil later teases Leona about gazing up at the night sky (“I had no idea you were such a romantic”).
When Kifaji comments on Leona forming friendships at NRC Vil asks, “Are we actually that good of friends with Leona?”
Vil later insists on Leona giving him a tour (“You promised me the time of my life —not a measly afternoon”), saying that if they are “shredding promises like paper” then he is in no obligation to participate in the tournament in order to force Leona’s hand.
Vil requests a tour “focuses on beauty” and Leona takes him to the hotel spa (Vil: “What do you think? I’m even more beautiful than before, aren’t I?” – Leona: “Yeah, sure, you look great. Good for you.”) and then into the city, where Vil says that he is “being a fantastic tour guide,” despite his grumbling, and, “I should make you show me around all the time.”
While visiting a marketplace the vendors recognize and begin swarming Vil, offering him free products in order to boost their sales.
Vil asks Leona to say something and Leona responds, “You don’t need me when these fine folk’ll bend over backwards to show ya around. I’m headin’ back to the hotel. Later,” and leaves.
Vil says, “Always running away at the first minor inconvenience… And here I was beginning to think he might not be totally useless!”
Leona has a voice line of, “Vil acted like he didn’t want to come, but he’s having the time of his life. I’ll have to work him hard later for all his complainin’.”
The earliest interaction we see between the two is Vil teasing Leona about chasing after Grim during the opening ceremonies, and Vil will often tease Leona apropos of nothing: he suggests they tell Leona’s brother “what a diligent, kind, and reliable friend his dear Leona is,” and makes comments about Leona from the side when Leona is having conversations with others.
Vil also calls Leona unsentimental and lazy.
Vil is unintimidated by Leona’s royal status (Leona: “Who are you to order me to do anything?!” – Vil: “VIL SCHOENHEIT, WORLD-CLASS SUPERMODEL. THAT’S WHO.”), ordering Leona to balance vases full of water on his head and shoulders to teach him how to walk properly for Fairy Gala.
When Savanaclaw students underestimate and insult him during Beanfest Vil says that Leona is an “utterly incompetent” handler, calling him “repugnant.”
There are also times when Vil will compliment Leona, saying he is handsome, acknowledging his strength during Playfulland, complimenting his appearance during Cloudcalling, and saying that he is not the kindhearted, self-sacrificing type, in a good way: “Leona wouldn’t do anything so pointless. He’s more indolent, snide, and pragmatic than anyone else I know….As loath as I am to admit it, he wasn’t wrong when he said he was smarter than the rest of us.”
In a vignette Vil notices that Leona has a loose button on his vest immediately before a photograph is to be taken of them together of the school newspaper and insists he fix it for himself. Leona refuses on the grounds that, of the two of them, Vil is the only one who cares, and Vil fixes the button for him, exclaiming, “The only think you have going for you is a handsome face. This is why I hate spoiled princelings!”
According to Ruggie, Vil will nag Leona about his fashion choices.
During Fairy Gala Vil compliments Leona for deciding to take the event seriously, though Leona says he simply “got sick of (Vil) getting on (his) case nonstop”.
Vil expresses exasperation at Leona’s willingness to give an earnest effort only when it makes his life easier and calls in Rook and Cater for their guidance. Leona concedes, preferring them to spending another minute alone with Vil.
It is Vil who convinces Leona to answer his phone during Halloween which it seems Leona had been intentionally avoiding all day, knowing exactly who it was (Cheka), and leaving the party immediately afterwards.
Vil calls Leona out on hiding the fact that he can drive, again calling him lazy and assuming that he must be pretending that he can’t in order to keep people from bothering him, though Leona says that this is not the case.
While driving through the savanna Vil suggests that Leona slow the car down before they drive through a puddle but Leona speeds up, instead, splashing mud on Vil’s face and ruining his makeup.
Vil is unamused how Leona had followed all the best practices as a driver the day before but suddenly has no shred of etiquette and Leona refers back to the beginning of the event when Vil, Jack and Lilia had laughed at him for not knowing anything about rules, best practices or etiquette (Vil: “Don’t tell me you’ve got some chip on your shoulder because of that!…Would you mind not taking your stress out on us?!”)
Leona says that he has always liked cars because they let you get away on your own, but “I guess drivin’ with loudmouth passengers once in a while ain’t so bad either.”
Leona gives Vil a pen with no ink for his birthday. (Vil: “I think he just pawned it off on me because he couldn’t be bothered to dispose of it otherwise.”)
Vil scolds Leona for taking a nap during Book 6 and throwing off his sleep schedule, and when Ortho prepares a game that is popular with cats for Leona to play Vil responds, “Leona, beholden to his feline nature? Who knew he could be so adorable?” (Jamil silently comments on Vil and the others closing in on Leona “like sharks smelling blood in the water.”)
When Vil insists on bringing along a “special serum” with him after they have escaped their cells at STYX Leona teases him for worrying about dried skin, with Vil proudly revealing its purpose to Leona as a homing beacon for Rook later on.
The two exchange banter immediately before the final battle with Idia and Ortho in Book 6, starting with Vil teasing Leona about failing to strike down the brothers despite his bravado and Leona responding, “If I didn’t give a certain prima donna some time in the spotlight, he’d never let me hear the end of it.” Vil says that, thanks to Leona and Jamil, he had enough time to reapply his lip gloss and perfect his hair for the finale.
Vil lectures Leona for not taking the fourth-year internships seriously, and when Leona reveals he has actually already submitted his application (unlike the rest of them) Vil responds, “Is Leona under some sort of curse that obliges him to be snide every time he opens his mouth?”
It is Leona and Riddle who call in Vil and Crewel for help during the Fairy Gala IF. Vil says that normally he would have turned down a request from Leona, but he refuses to stand for any sloppy fashion shows to be put on in his presence.
When Leona tells Kalim about the importance of Malleus taking the initiative to attend dorm meetings Vil adds from the side, “This from the guy who sleeps till just before the meeting and needs someone to literally drag him out of bed.”
When Leona is uninterested in taking part in the competition at the school store for New Year’s Vil tries to goad Leona into playing by saying that Jack has the spirit of a fighter, unlike Leona, but Leona remains uninterested, though Vil pushes with, “I’m quite confident I can win whether you join or not, Leona. It’s just a little game, but if you’re so loath to lose, then I’ll not force you to play.” (It is ultimately Jack who convinces Leona to join.)
When deciding who will sit in the front seat of Leona’s car during Cloudcalling Vil volunteers the information, “I wouldn’t sit up front if you paid me. I just want to enjoy the savanna scenery out the window. Having you next to me would spoil the view.” Leona responds, “I didn’t even ask you.”
While Vil’s teasing can be one-sided there is more back-and-forth in the Cloudcalling event: Vil compliments Leona’s driving, to which he sarcastically responds, “Your praise means everything to me.”
When Vil says that being reminded that the tournament is all about Leona negatively impacts his motivation Leona responds, “I’m expectin’ a good show from a top entertainer like you.”
They also share banter during Playfulland, with Vil commenting on Leona’s “show of arrogance” and saying they will not be thanking him for his efforts, to which Leona responds, “I was gettin’ sick and tired of babysitting these herbivores anyway. You can take care of them from here on out,” entrusting the safety of the younger students to Vil.
When Leona dismisses Crowley’s idea to retire Malleus in Book 2 Vil agrees with him, and they are simultaneously competitors and allies during Phantom Bride when they both become motivated to show up Malleus.
Vil adopts new speech patterns to appeal to Eliza during Phantom Bride and Leona reacts with “I’d take the regular you over this slimeball.”
When Eliza compares them to Idia they both insist they are “obviously superior”, and Jade observes that “They’ve lost sight of our objective”.
Vil agrees with Leona again in Book 6 when Leona expresses a desire to turn Idia’s hair to sand, again when Leona decides they ought to help a STYX staff member to force his cooperation, and again when Leona suggests that the first person to reach the Underworld gets to beat up Idia.
In Tartarus Vil reiterates this, saying that he “MUST reach Idia and Ortho first so (he) can give them a good slap on the face.”
Vil seems to have little patience for Rook inserting himself into Leona’s business: we see Rook looking for Leona during a class, and when Vil expresses displeasure Rook responds, “You don’t need to feel threatened”.
Vil gives Rook a warning: “While Leona is little more than a good-looking layabout, he is quite troublesome when angered. Do not let your provocations get out of hand.” Rook asks, “Is that an order, sir?”, and Vil responds, “You’re welcome to take it that way”.
Vil encourages Rook to join the Spelldrive club if he is so desperate for time with Leona as Leona is the club captain, and tells him, “I urge you to exercise discretion and ensure that you do not lose (the vice housewarden) seat…because I would replace you immediately if you got our dorm into trouble.”
Leading up to the Playfulland event Vil insists that he is only accompanying Ortho and the others to ensure that nothing happens to them, but Leona calls him out on the “very nice-sounding, made-up excuse,” saying, “You were just drawn to the promise of a stage performance and you know it.” Vil admits that he would be lying if he said he wasn’t interested in it.
Vil’s opponent in the Cloudcalling event intentionally kicks him in the leg, against the rules and worrying Kifaji, who blames Leona.
Leona responds, “Guess you look at Vil and think he’s delicate or somethin’. Just watch,” and Vil wins his round of the tournament, saying that he is a double threat of model and actor: “Faking pain is easy for me.”
Leona calls Vil out for getting hurt during his round, despite Vil’s insistence that he had only been pretending and is in perfect condition.
Directly before Vil’s final round Leona again calls Vil out for being injured despite the rest of the team saying that he looks fine. Leona says, “Don’t try to hide it. You’ve been strugglin’ ever since round one. It’s not like you…You didn’t let on durin’ the bouts, of course. Not in front of your adorin’ public. But whenever Lilia or Kalim was in the ring, I saw you favorin’ that leg from time to time.”
Vil responds, “…If you were able to see through me, then I dare say I need to improve my acting skills,” revealing that he actually did get injured in the first round and has been pretending otherwise.
Vil insists, “I will not simply give in. If it’s that or lose by default, I’ll fight on a broken leg if needs must,” but rather than risk injuring Vil further Leona joins the tournament himself, despite how his participation would mean an immediate disqualification and bring shame onto the entire royal family (re: Kifaji).
Afterwards Vil comments on how it doesn’t seem fair that Leona stole the spotlight and Leona responds, “Couldn’t pass up a chance to put you herbivores in your place, could I?”
