Jamil seems to not have a very high opinion of Crowley: when Crowley announces that he will be selecting stargazers for the Star Sending event via astrology Kalim says, “Being a Stargazer sounds neat,” and Jamil responds, “There’s nothing ‘neat’ about using astrology to randomly dump work on people.”
During Book 4 Jamil expresses interest in Crowley’s secrets, which he intends to use to remove Kalim from NRC. In the deeper level of his dream of Book 7 he has succeeded, with his next goal being to remove the other housewardens and then Crowley himself, saying, “That man is a disgrace to educators everywhere. I’ll do whatever it takes to tear him down.”
Crowley praises the VDC group for in Book 5, saying, “Defeat Royal Sword Academy and prove your beauty to the world!,” to which Kalim responds, “The headmage seems very enthusiastic about this whole thing, don’t you think?,” but Jamil says, “Knowing him, he probably thinks it would be a huge publicity boost if we won.”
When Crowley reveals that Ortho will be accepted as a new student at the school due to various reasons that include the Shroud family making “substantial contributions toward expanding the school’s facilities,” Jamil replies, “Surprise, surprise.”
When Crowley begins to panic at the start of Spectral Soiree (“HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO EXPLAIN THIS SCANDAL TO THE PUBLIC?!”) Jamil says, “Pull yourself together!,” pointing out that the kidnapped students should be safe as the final guests—Jamil and the others—have not arrived.
Trein gives apologizes that the staff will not be able to join the group in their efforts to safe the missing students despite being responsible for their safety and Crowley follows with, “Oh yes, terrible shame, that. So sorry, everybody! I’m sure you can do it, though!” Jamil responds, “I don’t care if you’re lying, but could you at least TRY to look concerned?”
We see an early interaction between Crowley and Jamil that might have been timed soon after Kalim was promoted to Housewarden, with Jamil asking why he would do so and Crowley responding, “Providing education comes with costs. And our young friend’s family has been quite generous in their support. It places me in a position where I must make certain…compromises. You’re a clever student. Surely you understand what that means.”
Jamil seems to suspect that Kalim’s family’s money influenced more than just his promotion to Housewarden: when Deuce asks if Kalim transferred into NRC two months late due to the nature of his soul being recognized belatedly Jamil responds, “I’m still skeptical that the Dark Mirror actually selects students based on that. Knowing the headmage, he probably arranged for a backdoor admission so he could get some generous Asim family donations.”
