After being requested by Ace and volunteered by Kalim, Jamil agrees to teach the first-year group how to dance in preparation for the VDC, tutoring Deuce on the importance of following rhythm and complimenting his reflexes, with Deuce ultimately passing his audition.
Deuce goes to both Kalim and Jamil for help with his dancing for the Starsending Event, but after showing his dance Jamil responds, “Not passable in the least. When you came up to us and said, ‘Please, I’ll do anything, just teach me the Starsending dance,’ I wondered what could possibly make you so desperate. Now I understand; that dance is NOT ready for prime time…He’s TOO motivated. He doesn’t have a shred of dignity or grace.”
During the New Year event Jamil provides both Deuce and Kalim with homemade snacks, including a hot egg salad sandwich for Deuce (this is later revealed to be a ruse to distract them long enough for Scarabia students to try and find a mystery bag containing an Amazing Ticket for Jamil).
Jamil and Deuce overlap in the school store prior to Glorious Masquerade, were Jamil says that Deuce’s confidence in his preparation makes him question it more. Jamil says, “I don’t want to have to bail you out just because you weren’t prepared,” but Deuce dismisses every item that Jamil recommends he pack except for an umbrella, saying, “You’re really paranoid.”
They meet again during the event itself, with Jamil using every item that he had recommended that Deuce bring in order to help Deuce: a scarf to turn into a bag, soap sheets and cotton swabs to open the stuck zipper on Deuce’s wallet, and all three together in order to remove a chocolate stain from Deuce’s shirt.
Deuce says, “You saved my bacon multiple times today. I insist on treating you to as many drinks as you want!,” and Jamil responds, “Don’t worry about paying me back. What would really help is if you stop getting into trouble when I’m around.”
Deuce and Jamil share a Master Chef course, where Deuce goes to Jamil for advice on what to cook for his mother. Jamil says, “You shouldn’t be asking us that. An idea should come to you when you think about the person you’re cooking for,” leading Deuce to draw the conclusion, “Mom thought about me, and then would make my favorite foods or things that were easy to eat. That’s what the chef meant when he said to cook from the heart!”
Impressed by Jamil’s filleting skills, Deuce asks his ghost chef for guidance on how to properly fillet a fish, even going over to Jamil’s side of the kitchen where Jamil gives him a demonstration.
During the Halloween activities at NRC, Jamil watches as Deuce seemingly agrees to join rowdy campus visitors who are looking to bully the students. Jamil follows them into the woods behind campus where he watches Deuce drop a cauldron on the group, threatening them with worse if they do any harm. Jamil reflects, “What did I just witness? Well, at least nothing came of it. Still, I had no idea Deuce could get that rough. There’s clearly more to him than meets the eye.”
Deuce has a voice line of, “Jamil fixed the lace on my hat for me. I guess all vice housewardens are good at looking out for others.”
