Jamil and Ace

When Jamil considers getting waterproof eyeliner for basketball practices Ace says, “Don’t suppose you’d get me some, too?” (Jamil: “Absolutely not”), and when Ace suggest that they go to see an action movie together Jamil asks, “So I can pay for you?”

Ace says, “No, no! But I mean, if you wanted to I wouldn’t stop you, of course! Doesn’t even have to be the ticket. I’d be happy with just some popcorn and a drink.” Jamil replies, “How magnanimous of you. But, sure, if the chance ever arises.”

When Ace suggests that they go as a group to get lunch during Halloween he also invites Jamil, who says, “Why, so you can sneak bites off my plate when I’m not looking?”  Ace replies, “WOW. I resent that. Can’t a guy just want to share a nice meal with his highly esteemed upperclassman?” (Jamil: “You are utterly shameless, you know that?”)

Ace asks Jamil to teach him how to dance for their VDC audition and Jamil agrees (“Teaching makes good practice for me, so…sure”). Ace successfully passes the audition.

Jamil and Ace are paired up in a class held in the botanical gardens where second-year students have their leadership skills assessed. Ace learns about a side job of Ruggie’s of selling mandrakes to the school’s ghosts and expresses interest but Jamil tells him, “You are to stay put and stand by until class is over.”

When Jamil is called away by Kalim he instructs Ace to stay put, but Ace immediately joins Ruggie in harvesting mandrakes, instead, getting into trouble as a result (Jamil: “This is what happens when you don’t do as I say”).

Despite telling Ace that he is “not inclined to be sympathetic” to his situation Jamil then presents his portion of their report, having awarded ace passing marks. 

When Ace wanders off during the Tapis Rouge event it is Jamil who goes after him, with Jamil then also getting scolded by Vil for separating from the group (Jamil: “H-how come I’m getting chewed out too?”).

The designer of Jamil’s outfit tells him that, based on a profile they’d received, they judged him “to be someone who comports himself with dignity.”

Ace comments, “Yeah you look REAL dignified when you’re chewing us out during basketball practice,” to which Jamil responds, “Backtalk like that makes me think I’m not giving you enough coaching, Ace. I’ll have to fix that.” (Ace: “No, thanks, you’re already doing plenty!”)

Jamil and Azul come together to tease Ace during the event, with Ace commenting, “You two sure were in lockstep jumpin’ at the chance to tease me,” and, “How come you only get along when it’s to make fun of me?”

It is Jamil who goes to Vargas when Ace disappears during Vargas Camp, and when Vargas says, “He’s probably too ashamed to face you guys after skipping out on his assignment” Jamil responds, “I have a hard time believing that shame is preventing Ace from coming back. Since when does he even have any?,” but then concedes, saying, “Maybe he’s right and I’m worried about nothing.”

Ace has a club wear line of, “One time I got hurt during practice, and Jamil patched me right up. He really knew what he was doing, too.”

Jamil has a club wear line of, “Whenever I play Ace one-on-one, there are a lot of feints and mind games on both sides. It gets pretty tense. I still win, of course,” and a Tapis Rouge line of, “Ace is actually doing as Vil says, without even complaining that much… I wish he was more like that in our club.”

Jamil also has a line of, “I opened my bag after basketball practice and found a bug sitting there..or at least, a toy one. Ace did it. You can rest assured | got him back thoroughly.”

In an early vignette Ace tries to get Jamil to intervene when Floyd insists on playing dodgeball during basketball practice, but after cautioning Floyd, Jamil then tries to excuse himself from the vignette. Floyd announces that he will be dancing instead and Ace stops Jamil from “sneaking off,” saying, “Don’t push all the work onto us underclassmen. Floyd’s totally wildin’ out, man! What’re we supposed to do?”

Jamil does intervene, but to caution Floyd on the dangers of breakdancing when he doesn’t know what he is doing (Jamil: “You were being so reckless that my passion for dancing got the better of me.” – Ace: You have a passion for dancing?”). 

Ace again tries to get Jamil to stop Floyd and while Jamil does try again, when Floyd continues trying to dance Jamil ultimately joins him, and Ace seems to give up on practicing (“Dude, I’m so over this. I’ve totally lost them”).
