Jamil and Floyd

Jamil and Floyd overlap during Beanfest when Floyd offers Jamil a weapon he has but does not want and Jamil assumes that he has been mistaken for a member of Floyd’s team, which he is not. Jamil attempts to uphold the ruse so as not to provoke him, only for Floyd to reveal that he actually knew they were enemies from the start. (Jamil: “It’s not nice to toy with your prey, you know.”)

Floyd explains that he isn’t in the mood to participate in the event, tells Jamil how to find Kalim and lets him go, but after he has been provoked (by Jack) into participating he says that he suspects Jamil “might at least put up a decent fight before I squeeze him, unlike most of the other guys in this game. Could actually be fun,” with Jamil apparently becoming his target. 

Jamil tries and fails to capture Floyd, and at the end of the event we see Floyd chasing Jamil down. Floyd uses the last of his ammunition on eliminating Jamil, and when Jamil advises that he restock Floyd reveals that he has lost interest in the game itself and wants to fight Jamil for real: “Doesn’t matter to me which side wins. So how’s about we throw the rules out the window and just play until both of us are totally wrecked?”

Jamil is saved by Azul, with Jamil observing, “Talk about a battle without anything remotely resembling a point…”

During Book 4 Jamil loses three of five rounds of Mancala to Floyd, despite having been made to spend “hours a day” playing with Kalim as a child, and later Azul reveals that Jamil had been maintaining “a perfectly balanced win/loss ratio to keep from throwing Floyd into a rage.”

Jamil and Floyd work at the school store during New Year at the same time, with Floyd handling customers when Kalim comes to shop. Kalim reassures Jamil he won’t “buy out entire shelves or the whole store,” but he then has Floyd do his shopping for him, and Floyd picks out items with “a LOT of zeroes.” Jack asks, “What if Jamil finds out?,” and Floyd responds, “So what if he does? We’re just givin’ Sealie what he wants.”

In an early vignette Floyd is seen trying to play dodgeball during practice with the basketball club, and Ace goes to Jamil to intervene. Jamil responds, “Trying to convince Floyd otherwise is a futile endeavor, but I’ll try,” and he begins by saying, “Club activities ARE recorded on your tran—“ but then changes tactics and says, “What would you do if we suffered defeat at the next tournament? I doubt you’d be pleased.”

Jamil then tries to excuse himself from the vignette but Ace notices (“Where do you think you’re sneaking off to?!”) and Jamil says, “You cannot reason with Floyd when he’s in one of his moods. Just let him do whatever he wants to do until he’s had enough. I’m done with this farce. The rest of you can go ahead and dance or assault each other with balls or whatever.”

Ace says, “Don’t push all the work onto us underclassmen. Floyd’s totally wildin’ out, man! What’re we supposed to do?,” and upon seeing Floyd try to teach himself how to breakdance Jamil does intervene, but it is to caution him on the danger of injuring himself. The vignette concludes with Jamil teaching Floyd how to breakdance. (Ace: “I’m so over this. I’ve totally lost them.”)

In Book 4 Floyd says that Jamil plays basketball “like a goody-goody” and he “had no idea (Jamil) was vice housewarden for Scarabia.”

Floyd possibly references Jamil in a conversation with Epel during Beanfest, telling Epel that he doesn’t like losing but he is still capable of enjoying things he doesn’t like:

“Let’s say there’s a guy in the same year as me in the Basketball Club who plays way better than me. He lands all these good shots, he reads the flow of the game and keeps poppin’ up in prime passing spots for me, and he always looks so SMUG doin’ it. Makes me wanna pull off some sick moves that make him look dumb in comparison. I’d be WAY more willing to put up with lousy cleaning and boring practice drills if it meant | had a shot at wiping that smug look off his face. So 1 practiced for two days straight-until | could pull off a totally sweet dunk of my own.”

Jamil is never mentioned by name, but with Ace and Jamil as the only other two named basketball team members and Ace being in his first year, it was possibly an anecdote about himself and Jamil.

When Ace disappears during Vargas Camp Floyd says, “He’s prolly just goofin’ off somewhere. Sounds fun, actually. Maybe I should join him.” Jamil responds, “Well, too bad. You’re not skipping out on campfire duty,” to which Floyd replies, “You’re talkin’ like Azul now.”

After Floyd is recognized for his role in completing Vargas’ final challenge for the students he he approaches Jamil, who does not need to be asked before replying, “I know where this is going. Fine, we’ll take care of your tent. I can’t deal with being indebted to you.” 

Jamil has a New-Years voice line of, “There’s no one better suited for handling customer complaints than Floyd. You say he goes overboard sometimes? I have no idea what you’re talking about,” and a Beanfest voice line of, “It’s unfortunate that Floyd’s on the enemy team. He’d be good to have as an ally…actually, no. He might make trouble for us too, given his moods.”

During Octavinelle’s battle against Malleus’ darkness army in Book 7 Jamil tells Jade and Azul:

“I’ve lost count of how many times (Floyd’s) unexpected moves have thrown me off during Basketball Club games. But sometimes his wild plays make all the difference when we’re behind, like that move he just pulled. He’s got potential as a fighter and a basketball player, but you can’t let your guard down around him even when you’re on the same team. That’s the kind of guy Floyd is. You two have my respect for being able to work with that.”

Floyd responds, “With all your complainin’ about me bein so random, I figured you never trusted me from the get-go. Eh, not that I give a hoot either way.”

When Floyd says he is envious of Silver’s unique magic Jamil says, “If Floyd had access to that spell, He’d probably use it to intrude into other people’s dreams and mess them up so badly they turn into nightmares.”
