During an evaluation at STYX Idia says Jamil “tends to go for efficiency over speed…He had no magic tutoring before enrolling at Night Raven College either. He’s constantly assessing his remaining reserves. It’s like he’s worried about going OOM. Thing is, he’s really quick and precise with defensive magic. Maybe that’s his specialty, since he guards Kalim?”
Jamil having strong magical precision control is mentioned specifically in an early vignette where he arranges chairs with magic Sebek tells Grim, “W-we don’t have that level of control yet, so there’s nothing we can do! I must learn how to wield my magic more precisely as well.”
Jamil has taught himself how to do his hair with magic, which now “barely takes (him) five minutes.” He says, “It used to take a lot longer when I was still figuring things out. Half an hour, even up to two hours sometimes. It takes a lot of finesse to do intricate braiding with magic. But | just viewed it as magical training and kept at it every day. Now, I’ve mastered it to the point that I can change up the type of braid whenever the mood strikes me.”
Jamil says that he doesn’t rely on magic for little things like putting books back on a shelf (“Unless maybe it was a pile of books”), but he did end up using it to do laundry in Scarabia when the entire dorm agreed to use a day off to clean, only for the laundry team decide to play in water, instead. Jamil explains he had students use magic for folding and hanging things up, and it helped him practice controlling magic, but he doesn’t want to do so every time.
During Book 4 Jade says that, similar to Ruggie’s unique magic, “There’s also hypnosis magic that takes control of a target’s mind. But it requires a far higher degree of skill and magical power than its bodily counterpart. Which means very few mages are capable of using it.” Floyd follows with “You gotta have skills and power on par with Azul for that” but Azul says, “Even I would be hard-pressed to control living creatures with their own egos like humans.”
Upon learning what Jamil can do Skully says, “Hypnosis magic?! You can use such sophisticated magic…?!”
Jamil’s unique magic “Snake Whisper” (hidden meaning: The Snake’s Invitation) is therefore possibly a high-level magic. Jamil explains that the spell has its limitations, and “It would be difficult to extract very specific information from a target. If done a certain way, I might be able to get a similar result, but that’s neither here nor there…” and during Book 4 he says “it would be hard to keep (Azul) controlled long-term,” so it may have a natural time limit.
Kalim seems to have known what Jamil’s unique magic is prior to Book 4, almost revealing it in Book 2. While we do not know the circumstances under which he learned it, in Book 7 he mentions Jamil using it prior to their enrollment at NRC to make “bad guys fight each other” in an incident that may or may not be related to why Kalim knows what it is.
