Jamil’s wish for the Starsending event is “to take a trip by myself,” and Trey says, “Alone time’s hard to come by when you’re at school. That’s not to say hanging out with people isn’t fun, just that sometimes you want a little peace and quiet. Am I on the right track, Jamil?”
Jamil agrees: “Couldn’t have put it better myself, Trey. I appreciate you looking at it from my perspective.
Jamil continues with, “Honestly? I don’t care where I go. Just once, I want to go someplace where no one knows me and kick back for a while. I don’t see that happening before I graduate, though.Maybe I’ll peruse some travel magazines in the meantime; make sure I’m ready if my wish comes true.”
Jamil has a Harveston card voice line of, “I’ve heard the air is clear and the night sky looks gorgeous in snowy lands. I hope to see it for myself someday,” and when he learns that Silver’s father has been to the eastern lands he responds, “l’ve always wanted to visit the East.”
For Jamil’s second birthday vignette Sebek presents him with traveler’s essay collection, saying, “I understand you want to do some solo traveling, so I thought this book might be to your liking.”
Jamil looks throw the book and remarks, “Ah, Port o’ Bliss. It’s a famous city. A movie was set there too. I’ve always wanted to go,” and if he were traveling in the northern Shaftlands he would want to see the aurora, saying, “I’ll certainly bring this book along whenever I do travel the world.”
When asked where he would go if he could use flight magic to go anywhere without having to worry about magic capacity Jamil responds, “I’d probably go on a lengthy backpacking trip around the world. But I’m guessing the point is to pick one place, so l’d like to go somewhere cold where there’s a lot of snowfall. It’s because I want to see what it’s like living in a climate totally different from the one I grew up in.”
Silver asks if he has any particular area of interest and Jamil responds, “Sightseeing, mainly. Famous buildings, historical places-that sort of thing. Being there would allow me to learn stuff from the locals that you’d never find in textbooks.”
When Silver says he had never thought of such a thing, possibly because he is not used to traveling, Jamil responds, “Me neither. It’s just something l’ve seen in books and movies…though I suppose I shouldn’t rule out the possibility that my old life back home has influenced me in some way as well.”
Jamil explains, “Back then I’d sometimes go to the market with my middle school friend(s). We’d eat all sorts of street food and try our hands at bartering. Thinking about it now makes me realize having those kinds of interactions with locals is part of the fun of traveling,” and, “I’d better keep studying so I can make the most of it when the time comes.”
When asked what he wants to do in the next year Jamil says, “I want to study the cultures of different lands…Because I think it’ll help me interact with the locals when I’m finally able to travel. Every land has its own customs and manners, doesn’t it? And if you don’t understand the culture of the person you’re talking to, you could end up offending them unintentionally. I want to study up and try to prevent any missteps on my part…well, that, and also because I don’t want to get taken advantage of by anyone either.”
Jamil says, “Tourist spots, climate, local cuisine, souvenirs…you can never be too prepared when it comes to reading up in advance. My club’s not meeting today, so I’m going to do some research. I’m taking a family vacation over the holidays,” but he does not mention where it is that they went.
