In a vignette Jamil is paired with Ace for an assignment where his leadership skills will be assessed, but he is called away by Kalim.
Ace assures Jamil that he will follow Jamil’s instructions but does not, getting into trouble with mandrakes (via Ruggie) while Jamil is away. Afterwards Jamil gives Ace passing marks anyway, telling Ruggie not to interfere with his lessons in the future.
Ruggie says that it was likely not going to be a hit to his grade as Crewel did not notice what happened, so it is possible that he did not receive poor marks for leadership despite the situation.
Cater says that Jamil is “one of the most responsible guys” he knows, and at the beginning of Spectral Soiree Crowley entrusts Jamil with guiding the entire non-kidnapped student body to the Mirror Chamber, where he struggles to keep Floyd and Ortho in check (Scarabia Student: “Without any housewardens, it’s like a herd of cats in here”).
When the mirror begins to glow Jamil protects the students nearest him with a barrier, much in the way he does during Book 7. When Crowley begins to panic about the public relations disaster that is unfolding it is Jamil who tells him to pull himself together and reassures him.
Jamil oversees and instructs a group of first-year students setting up a room for a ceremony and is also a leading force during both Nightmare Before Christmas and Fairy Gala, where he promotes Kalim’s solution to infiltrating the gala, outlines a plan on how they will do so, assigns the different students to their roles in the plot and bring in Crewel and Vil for guidance (Ruggie: “No wonder Scarabia’s the dorm of mindfulness. You really are willing to go to any lengths to achieve a goal”).
Jamil also directs the group during the day of the gala itself, keep them focused and leading the performance.
Jamil is also the leader of the Firelit Sky group, keeping the different members on schedule and identifying the pickpocket at the end as well as detailing and executing the plan that results in his capture (Trey: “I think it was really Jamil who caught him”).
During Vargas Camp it is Jamil who follows up about the missing Ace and keeps Floyd on task (Floyd: “You’re talkin’ like Azul now”), as well as deciding the course of action when Deuce disappears.
Jamil is also seen directing the Tapis Rouge group, reminding Azul and Ace of their responsibilities and ordering them to hold back the press, which they obey.
Jamil also leads a group of mixed-dorm students during Beanfest, but he loses his leadership status once he pairs with Lilia (and does not seem pleased).
Jamil is also seen leading the students of Scarabia, providing the opening greetings and instructions to new students of the year instead of Kalim, who follows with, “Now go and do what he said!”
When Kalim fails to appear in time to fulfill his role during a party for Crowley, Scarabia students go to Jamil for guidance, with someone even recommending that Jamil take Kalim’s place (Jamil: “No. That would destroy Kalim’s reputation”).
Jamil says, “Aren’t you proud members of Scarabia? You’re supposed to be prepared for anything, retaining your composure no matter the circumstance,” successfully calming down the students, and when they try to take responsibility for Kalim’s absence he responds, We can talk about who’s at fault later. For now, we need to focus on the problem at hand.” (The party is ultimately saved by Jamil working alone behind the scenes.)
On the subject of using magic, Jamil tells Silver about a time they needed to use it at Scarabia when Kalim and a group of Scarabia students chose to play in water rather than do laundry (“Kalim was meant to be supervising…| assumed they’d finish without issue as long as they kept a decent pace. Naïve of me, I know”).
Jamil explains how he directed different students to complete different tasks including using magic for folding and hanging things up, and while they finished on time, he says, “I don’t want to do that every time. It’s just too hard on me and my dormmates.”
When Jamil leaves the school for three days for the social in Fleur City, he issues “the whole dorm a manual on what to do during any unforeseen events.”
During New Year Jamil leads a group of Scarabia students in looking through mystery bags for one that contains an Amazing Ticket. Jamil buys the bag that they select but they had misidentified a 10-meal ticket for the cafeteria as an Amazing Ticket. Jamil reflects, “I don’t think there’s an Amazing Ticket, but this is actually a decent haul. Maybe I’ll let them have the meal ticket…”
During the Lantern event where all of NRC’s dorms come together to craft lanterns, a Scarabia student reveals he had ignored a message from Jamil because, “I figured if there was trouble, he’d have things well in hand,” but later we see Scarabia students following Jamil’s instructions.
Jamil is seeing giving directions to and being obeyed by Scarabia students during Book 4, where the students say, “I’ve always felt that someone thoughtful like Jamil deserves the seat of house leader way more than Kalim,” that Jamil is the most suitable to be housewarden out of all of them, and, “Scarabia’s got no use for a leader who can’t lead!”
In Book 5 Jamil says, “The overblot incident has caused my reputation at school to plummet. It makes sense for me to fall in line with Kalim for a while, in the interest of improving my position both within Scarabia and without.”
Azul responds, “The students must be circling you like sharks, waiting for the first sign of blood so they can challenge you for your seat.”
In an early vignette Riddle comments on how it is Jamil, not the housewarden, who keeps Scarabia running, and when Jamil is kidnapped in Book 6 Rook tells Kalim, “You need to step up and fulfill your housewarden duties by yourself.”
We have possibly not seen Jamil interacting with students of Scarabia in the Main Story following his overblot, but in Book 7 when Jamil vetoes Kalim’s order to lead the students away and sends Kalim to lead them himself, it is Kalim who instructs the students of their dorm.
