Silver and Sleeping

Silver says that his drowsiness hits him “hard and fast” and that it has been this way since he was a child, sometimes when he is walking, in the middle of a conversation, or doing sword training.

Silver says that he gets plenty of sleep at night and has no idea what it happens, and neither do any of the medical mages that Lilia has taken him to in search of an answer.

Silver seems to have come to the conclusion “it must be (his) laziness that makes (him) so drowsy”: when he falls asleep while training with a sword he decides “it must be evidence of how lax (he has) become,” and he tells his equally sleepy tsum that they both need more training.

We see a flashback from Silver’s childhood where he is sleeping while “standing up with a wooden sword in his hand” for his first introduction to Sebek, and another where Sebek chides him for “lazing about” in Malleus’ presence (Silver had fallen asleep).

In a chat Sebek accuses him of laziness as well, saying that “It’s not as if you’ve been enchanted by a fairy. You’re just lazy!”

There are many instances of Silver falling asleep throughout the game: in the woods behind the school, in classrooms, at the Halloween party, in the school courtyard, during his own birthday party, and more.

Silver says he has received “lots of bedding-related gifts” for his birthday as a result (“You wouldn’t believe how much I’ve learned about pillow types.”)

We also see him use Sebek as a pillow after falling asleep on his feet in a hallway, and while in line for the school store. He also falls asleep inside of the school store.

Kalim says that Silver also fell asleep during their art class while modeling for him, we also see him fall asleep during Vargas Camp when he is supposed to be guarding the fire.

Prior to Beanfest Ortho calculates that there was “at least an eighty percent chance” of Silver falling asleep during the event.

In a vignette with Azul Silver confides that he has had difficulty getting students at Diasomnia to listen to him, and Azul spends three hours teaching him how to sit, rebuke others, shake hands and present himself to be properly intimidating and project an air of authority.

Sebek appears at the end of the vignette and Silver attempts to reprimand him for his usual rudeness by forbidding him access to Malleus until he can fix his attitude.

Sebek does not react well, and it is revealed that the reason students are not listening to Silver’s orders is because he falls asleep mid-conversation.

Silver seems confused by the thought that people think he gets sleepy when he tries to study, but he then immediately falls asleep during a lecture by Jamil.

When Deuce is evasive in response to his mother asking about his studies, Silver wonders if Deuce also falls asleep during his classes.

Silver also falls asleep during the Rabbit Run event at the White Rabbit Fes, falls asleep in a hallway during Fairy Gala, falls asleep on Main Street after Fairy Gala and falls sleep while sitting on a water fountain in Fleur City.

We also see Silver fall asleep during one of Crewel’s classes and in response to Lilia playing on an electric guitar in an attempt to wake up his tsum.

Rook says that if he were to choose anyone at NRC to be on a deserted island with him he would choose Silver precisely because of Silver’s ability to fall asleep anywhere, and “Sleep is essential to keeping up one’s health and remaining active, more so in an unknown land. The ability to sleep whenever and wherever is a critical weapon in the quest for survival.”

Kalim says that Silver will fall asleep mid-conversation in class and in the hallways, and he recently fell asleep during a potionology assignment.

Sebek says that not even his yelling will wake Silver up in the morning, and Silver also does not wake up in response to a “high-powered concert amp.”

In a vignette Silver goes to the school store in search of something that will wake him up, and his motivation for attending the White Rabbit Fes in Deuce’s hometown is to add to his “array of alarm clocks.”

Silver oversleeps at the beginning of the event, saying that he’d thought four alarms clocks would be enough to wake him.

He says that ordinary alarm clocks do not work on him and he needs “something really loud. Or grating. Or both.”

He opts for an alarm clock with voice recording, saying that someone’s voice might be more likely to wake him than a mechanical noise.

The Rabbit Fes group records a wake-up call together but Silver says he is not sure that it will be enough, so Deuce records a “very impactful” wake-up call on his own, which does successfully wake Silver up after he falls asleep during the climatic Rabbit Run race.

Silver goes to various lengths to try and keep himself awake: he tries getting extra sleep and then drinking a lot of black coffee, drinking black tea, and eating a peppermint candy.

He has a chat line about wanting a spell to keep himself from randomly falling asleep.

He tells his tsum, “I’ve been trying a variety of approaches to see what helps me fend off my own bouts of drowsiness. Swinging a baton, sprinting, weight training…a bunch of things. Unfortunately none of it’s really helped me, but it might be a useful point of reference for you.”

He suggests that they try training together to stay conscious, and the next we see them they are both asleep.

Silver has voice lines about bright lights maybe helping him stave off sleep, says he keeps moving in order to keep from getting sleepy, and he has tried gum as well.

(The literal line is “bottle gum,” and is possibly a reference to caffeinated gum that comes in little plastic bottles and is advertised as a way to keep you alert when you are drowsy.)

Silver tries making a wake-up potion with Kalim and Jamil and then says he will no longer be a slave to his drowsiness, but we do not see the results of the potion to confirm whether or not it was effective.

One of the reasons Silver joins the Master Chef course is to learn tricks for maintaining focus in the face of distractions to help overcome his tendency to fall asleep everywhere.

He says that he has fallen asleep while boiling something for dinner several times before, and does almost fall asleep during the class.

At the conclusion of the course, however, we receive a rare hint that there might be a solution to his sleepiness problem: he says that he spent much of the day thinking about how he would like to make tomato-based dishes for Lilia, and those thoughts might have been enough of a distraction to keep him from falling asleep.

Silver’s sudden sleepy spells are often commented on: Ortho says that Silver fell asleep two minutes after he started telling Silver a ghost story, Jade wonders if Silver is capable of falling asleep on thrill rides, and Lilia says that he will often fall asleep while standing up.

Ace says he has heard about Silver falling asleep without warning, Grim comments on Silver falling asleep while they were decorating Ramshackle and in the school’s courtyard, and Malleus teases Silver about being awoken by the Bell of Salvation during the Glorious Masquerade event.

Malleus purchases coffee for Silver during the Firelit Sky event, saying, “it might help him stay awake,” and when speaking to a confused Idia in Book 7 he says, “you seem sleep-addled. It reminds me of Silver, from my own dorm.”

Riddle mentions a time that Silver fell asleep while changing his clothes after morning practice wit the equestrian club, saying that he and Sebek had to physically carry him to class.

Asking Silver if he is half asleep seems to be common amongst the members of Diasomnia, and Sebek in particular.

Silver says that he doesn’t become irresistibly sleepy when he is in dreams, but there may be exceptions: even within Lilia’s dream he starts to become drowsy after seeing the Dawn Knight, when his ring starts to glow.
