Jamil’s Sister: Najma
Jamil has a voice line of, “Najma may treat others with respect, but her own brother? Of course not. Who taught her to act that way?,” and Najma’s introduction in the event is her stealing food from Jamil and eating it herself, as well as referring to him with an impolite form of the word “this” (Localized on EN as “dude,” more here ▶︎)
Najma refers to Jamil, just once, as お兄ちゃん (onii-chan).
Cater says, “She’s got Jamil’s signature stare down pat!,” and, “Your expressions are exactly the same. That’s adorable!”
Najma says that she and Jamil would play a game that involves stacking animal toys “all the time” when they were kids, and “Jamil was the best in the whole neighborhood.”
Jamil says, “I had to pick up all the pieces myself, usually with Mom and Dad hounding me to do it.”
Najma responds, “Well, you still look after me despite all your grumbling. So it’s easy for me to lean on you, y’know? Thanks for that,” and Jamil says, “Heh. Spoiled rotten.”
Najma sends Jamil hair milk for his birthday, though Jamil says that the scent of lotus blossom is “way too strong” for him to put in his hair. He wonders, “Is she trying to mess with her brother on his birthday?,” but then decides, “No, knowing her, maybe she just didn’t think it through. I’ll thank her for it regardless.”
Najma says when she tried to bake a loaf of bread for the first time she burnt it and almost cried, but Jamil took the burnt loaf and used it to make salisbury steak.
Jamil follows with, “Najma got discouraged after that, so I had to be the one to bake all the bread for our family,” and there might be a theme of Najma and Jamil cooking for their household, with Najma promising to prepare curry for Jamil the night of the festival.
She also sends him a photo of curry on his birthday, though who made it is not specified.
Jamil has a voice line about cooking at home (“I wish I could relax when I cook at home, but if I got sloppy my sister would notice and start complaining in a heartbeat”) and says that Najma would bake cookies for him on his birthday.
Jamil says he has learned cooking from a lot of people including his parents, but we maybe do not yet have any lines about his parents cooking food for the family, only the Viper siblings cooking for the family or for each another.
Jamil says that Najma would chide him for producing bland-looking food and, after a conversation with Trey, says, “Perhaps I can surprise my sister the next time I go home.”
Jamil also gets an idea about adding color to his dishes from Deuce, which he uses as inspiration for his Master Chef project, explaining that both his sister and the entire basketball club have also commented on the lack of color in his cooking.
Najma says that she and Jamil would go to the Camel Bazaar together all the time together with a certain, unnamed friend of Jamil’s from middle school.
Jamil cautions Najma about washing her hands before she eats and while Trey says, “You really look out for your sister,” Cater says, “It’s a little overbearing, if you ask me.”
Jamil says that Najma “used to bug (him) to sing her to sleep,” but when he “did (his) best and sang (his) heart out,” “she scrunched up her face and yelled, ‘YOU’RE AWFUL!’”
Idia points out that Jamil has proved himself to be a good enough singer to meet Vil’s standards (re: Book 5) and Jamil explains,
“After my sister’s teasing, I put in some work. I’m good enough not to embarrass myself now. Though of course when I mentioned it after my sister’d seen the VDC broadcast, and I told her ‘I guess you can’t make fun of me anymore,’ she just looked at me blankly and said, ‘What are you talking about?’ I felt so ridiculous for letting it get to me all those years. But it’s helped me keep my grades up in music class, so I suppose it’s not a total waste.”
When Jamil receives tickets for friends and family to the VDC event of Book 5 he says, “My little sister said she’d be visiting for the culture fair. I suppose I could give her one,” so it might be unclear if Najma attended the event in person, saw a broadcast, or both.
Jamil explains that he knows how to do coffee divination because Najma will ask him to do it sometimes.
When asked about memories from Asim’s family home, Jamil explains a time that he used the Asim family’s kitchen to make lunch for himself and the other servants, which Kalim’s parents then heard about, resulting in him cooking for Kalim’s entire family, which he is now expected to do several times a year, and the catalyst to everything was Najma stealing the lunch he had prepared for himself at home.
Jamil says that his family has served the Asim family for generations, which is “the fate of those born a Viper.” While it is possible that this means that Najma, too, is a child servant of the Asim family, that information has not been canonically confirmed.
In volume 2 of the official Twisted Wonderland Design Note, Najma is confirmed to be 13 years old (four years younger than Jamil).
Jamil mentions possibly going “a little overboard with the souvenirs for (his) family” at the start of Firelit Sky, and he mentions possibly getting makeup for Najma during Tapis Rouge, though he then says, “Actually, she’ll probably hate whatever I pick out.”
Jamil has a Glorious Masquerade voice line of, “My sister begged me to get her a souvenir when I told my family I’d be visiting Fleur City. I’ll pick up a sachet or something like that for her.”
Najma seems unintimidated by the older students of the Firelit Sky group, buying dragon fruit and drizzling it with honey for Malleus and trying to feed Cater bread with apricot jam, and inviting the entire group to “come hang at (her) house next time” when she leaves.
During Glorious Masquerade Jamil mentions Najma getting her hair trimmed once a month.
When Jamil asks Najma how she is doing in school she replies, “Great, naturally. My grades are stellar and I’m doing well in sports, too. After all, I’m YOUR sister,” but then follows with, “Actually, l’ve been a little worried about how you’re doing at school. You put on a real good show of being a decent guy in public, and you do a great job taking care of everything. But you can take silly things ways too seriously sometimes, and you can be so stubborn. It makes me worry that you’re pushing yourself too hard. Try not to overthink everything, okay?”
Jamil replies, “I’m doing just fine. You don’t have to worry about me. Remember, I’m YOUR brother.” (The timing of Firelit Sky—potentially before or after Jamil’s overblot—is possibly being left intentionally vague.)
At the conclusion of the fireworks festival Jamil says, “I can’t wait to see the look on Najma’s face when she finds out I was involved in the show.”
