Jamil is Cater’s interviewer for his second birthday vignette, and when Cater greets him with, “Mind if we take a quick selfie?,” Jamil replies, “Go right ahead,” without any disparaging thoughts or backhanded comments, and during the Firelit Sky event Jamil volunteers to take a picture of Cate specifically for him to post it to Magicam. Is it possible that Jamil is more accepting of Cater’s interest in Magicam than other students?
Jamil gives Cater skateboard decals for his birthday despite Cater having never told him that he skateboards, explaining, “I heard it from Kalim. He mentioned at one point that you were good at it. I checked your Magicam account and saw that you posted about getting a new board, so I picked out some designs I thought you might like, and made sure the colors matched the board in the pictures you put up.” (Cater: “I’m p. sure I mentioned that to Kalim ages ago. I’m impressed you remembered that.”)
Later in the conversation Cater asks, “Do you think I come off as some nice upperclassman?,” and Jamil responds, “Certainly. I can tell just from what Ace says that you do a lot for the guys in your dorm. I think you’re very caring compared to other older students. It’s quite impressive.”
At the start of the Firelit Sky event Cater decides not to live-post his photos from Silk City, saying, “I’d hate to wind up on Jamil’s bad side if Kalim got kidnapped because of info I posted.”
When Jamil tries to send Najma away during the event it is Cater who invites her to join the group, to Jamil’s displeasure, though Cater himself says, “I’d just about die of embarrassment if my sisters saw me while I was hanging out with friends.” (Trey: “And yet you were the one who invited her to do just that. Savage move, Cater.”)
Jamil seems to watch Cater as he shops during the event, later telling him, “I saw the things you bought, and I couldn’t help noticing they were all for other people. Don’t you want something for yourself?,” and offering to show him to other stalls if there is nothing around that interests him in order to make sure that he is having a good time.
Cater silently reflects, “Jamil’s pretty sharp. He really notices things about other people,” and asks Jamil to pick out something for him, instead. (Cater: “Didn’t you just say you wanted me to have a good time?” – Jamil: “Rgh…Okay, fine. ONE thing.”)
Jamil takes Cater to a shop that sells “fancy outfits and little pouches” made out of silk, explaining, “I noticed your phone case is from a popular brand. And your bag’s the same brand as well, which says to me that you accept no substitutes when it comes to your stuff. So l figured you’d prefer something that’s more for locals than tourists.”
When Cater chooses a yellow scarf for himself Jamil seems less than enthused, recommending a “cutesy salmon pink one.” Cater says, “It’s not really a color I usually go for…” and Jamil explains that he didn’t select it due to recent fashion trends, but because he “just thought a softer color suited (Cater’s) personality,” saying, “You’re so friendly and easy to get along with. You give off a gentle vibe.”
Jamil says that he has been grateful for Cater and Trey’s “steadying presence” throughout the day (despite also giving him their “fair share of trouble,” re: Najma), and Cater responds, “I didn’t know you saw me that way. I’m flattered, honestly,” and agrees to buy the scarf that Jamil recommended, despite it not being to his tastes, because Jamil “put a lot of thought into it.”
Jamil volunteers to take a photo of Cater for his Magicam account, and Cater says that he will pick out something for Jamil just as Jamil picked out something for him. Jamil tries to refuse, but Cater insists, “I’ll choose something just as nice for you! You can count on it!,” though it is not revealed what it was that he chose.
During the Spectral Soiree Halloween Party, Cater volunteers Jamil for a conversation with Silver despite Jamil’s reluctance (“Please don’t volunteer me for this”), though Jamil eventually concedes.
