Jamil and Trey share a conversation during the NBC event that consists largely of them both praising one another while downplaying their own abilities:
Trey: “I hear the Scarabia students talk all the time about how good of a chef you are, and how vast your repertoire is. Don’t expect too much out of me beyond the sweets. I hope you’ll share plenty of pointers with me today.”
Jamil: “You give me too much credit. To be honest, fancy party food is not my specialty. I’m especially bad at plating things. I do fine with home cooking, but still…I find it impressive the way you whip up enough food to serve a crowd at a big tea party.”
Idia: “Trey and Jamil are basically the archetypes of functioning members of society at our school. And yet they still have that secret ulterior motive vibe that has ‘vice housewarden’ written all over it.”
After Jamil teaches Epel how to waltz they, too, get into a back-and-forth of insisting that the other deserves the credit:
Epel: “Looks like your dancing inspired them.”
Jamil: “If anything inspired them, it was you and all the fun you were having.”
Epel: “Not at all! I was only able to dance like that because you’re a great lead.”
Jamil: “You’re giving me far too much credit.”
When Silver presents Jamil to Lilia as having aided him during their journey through the Spectral Realm Silver declares, “He’s clearheaded and has a keen eye for detail. I relied on him so much during our journey.” Jamil responds, “You’re giving me a bit too much credit. I wasn’t exactly…” but Silver insists, saying, “Don’t be modest. You amazed me so many times today.”
Jamil observes, “…Only because you never listen,” but then follows with, “I should thank you, actually. Your honesty and strength were a great boon to me today,” only to silently reflect, “You deserve to hear that much. I’d hate to leave myself in some kind of moral debt.”
Silver later thanks Jamil again, saying, “Your knowledge and insight helped me at so many points,” and Jamil responds, “I didn’t do anything special.”
When Crowley compliments a banquet that Jamil prepares for him in a vignette Jamil downplays himself and praises Kalim instead, saying, “You should thank Kalim for orchestrating the menu…I am only as good of a cook as I am thanks to growing up in the Asim household. It is all thanks to Kalim.” (Kalim: “Heh heh!”)
Later, when Crowley again compliments the banquet that Jamil cooked and the parade that Kalim planned but Jamil saved when Kalim did not appear, followed by Jamil saving Kalim when he fell from his magic carpet, Kalim responds, “It was no big deal. Right, Jamil?,” and Jamil agrees with, “It was nothing, sir,” silently reflecting, “Today was utterly exhausting. I never want to hold a banquet like that again.”
When Vil compliments Kalim’s dancing during Fairy Gala Jamil follows with, “Kalim’s studied traditional dance since he was a child,” downplaying his own experiences with, “I’m a bit into street dancing, myself.”
In a pre-orientation vignette where Kalim says he thought that Jamil would be nominated for Housewarden Jamil downplays himself, saying, “I’m not at all suited to it,” and, “Ruling suits you better.”
After hearing about a difficult poitionology assignment Jamil says, “Even a challenge half this hard is above my level,” to which Azul responds, “I knew you’d feign modesty.”
During the drama of Book 4 a Scarabia Student says, “Jamil deserves the seat of Housewarden way more than Kalim,” to which Jamil responds, “I’m not special or superior to anyone else. My grades are dead average. On a scale of one to ten, mine are fives across the board. I’m not fit to be housewarden.”
Grim references this during a conversation with Azul, who responds, “I wouldn’t be so sure. You know what they say— a clever hawk hides its talons.”
When Jack comments on how well Jamil and Malleus get along during New Year’s Jamil says, “Malleus is certainly doing the lion’s share of the work—thank you for that, by the way,“ to which Malleus responds, “Give yourself more credit, Viper.”
When Malleus credits Jamil wit the idea of selling miniature shishimai as commemorative souvenirs Jamil downplays himself, saying, “Honestly, I wasn’t expecting them to take off the way they did. Your influence is what made those sales.”
When the dream-jumping group arrives in a dream that seems to be entirely ocean, forcing Ortho to carry everyone, Jamil creates a boat of ice from seawater for them to sit in. Ortho calls Jamil a dependable second-year student but Jamil replies, “I’m hardly as dependable as the one flying around with us all clinging to him.”
