Jamil and Malleus

Unlike most students Jamil might not be particularly afraid of Malleus: when students of Scarabia refuse to escort Sebek to his dorm, saying, “What if we run into THE Malleus Draconia,” Jamil responds, “There’s no need to be frightened. He doesn’t bite,” and he tells Kalim, “I wish you would take a leaf from Malleus’ book and try composing yourself at least a little.”

When Floyd teases Jack about his outfit during Halloween Jamil scolds him with, “Stop harassing the underclassman, Floyd. Ever consider conducting yourself in a way that befits your dignified attire?,” and then tells Malleus, “Actually, speaking of dignified—that outfit suits you well. Very stately.”

While possibly not frightened of Malleus as a mage Jamil does seems careful of him as a member of royalty, opposing his participation in the Firelit Sky event due to his lack of chaperone: “It could set off an international incident well beyond our control!”

Malleus does not seem to appreciate being not being welcomed (Trey: “Hey, does anybody else hear thunder?”), going back and forth with Jamil until Jamil is forced to concede (Jamil: “Okay, fine. I guess we’ve no choice but to bring Malleus along…without any sort of escort or chaperone.” – Crowley: “And if there’s any trouble during your vacation, I want absolutely nothing to do with it!”)

When Malleus becomes quiet during a car ride Jamil asks, “Have we inadvertently offended you somehow?,” and when the group guesses that he might be carsick Jamil hurries to prepare motion sickness medicine. When Malleus goes to investigate a fountain Jamil hurries to protect him from the water with an umbrella (“It would be terrible if we let the prince of Briar Valley go around sopping wet”) but Malleus creates a barrier to protect himself (and not Jamil), resulting in Jamil getting wet, instead.

Jamil is rendered temporarily speechless when one of the first things Najma says to Malleus is “That’s some strange headwear you got going on” (Jamil: “You can’t talk like that to Malleus!”), and tries to intervene when she has Malleus open a coconut for her (“Malleus Draconia, being treated like a glorified nutcracker…”).

When Malleus struggles to find a souvenir for Lilia, Jamil recommends a vacation shirt that he ultimately purchases. Jamil also recommends that he get tea for Sebek (“Tea can have a calming effect”), which Males buys.

When a vendor teases Malleus with ice cream that he ordered, dangling it in front of him and then yanking it back, Jamil begins to panic, saying, “1 am SO SORRY, Malleus. It’s supposed to be a bit of fun, but I must apologize for their rudeness! I implore you to overlook this!,” but Malleus says, “It would take far more than that to anger me, I assure you. I was simply impressed with the performance.” (Jamil: “Whew… Glad to hear it.”)

When a rude vendor cautions Malleus against touching the items in his shop Jamil quietly reflects, “How could he talk to the heir apparent of Briar Valley that way?!,” and audibly he reveals Malleus’ rank, saying, “I suggest you watch your tone.” (Vendor: “Why didn’t you say something sooner, Jamil?”)

When Malleus wishes to look inside another shop Jamil volunteers to hold his bags for him and wait outside.

At the start of Glorious Masquerade Jamil says, “I was worried when Sebek started arguing and insisting that he join Malleus’s group, but honestly, I’m glad he has a proper guard.”

Later on Jamil whispers to Riddle about Malleus, wondering if no one in the town has recognized him due to his hat camouflaging his horns. Malleus asks, “Were you just discussing my horns?,” Jamil responds, “No! Never!”

During New Year’s Jack comments on how well Jamil and Malleus work together and Jamil says, “Malleus is certainly doing the lion’s share of the work—thank you for that, by the way,” but Malleus replies, “Give yourself more credit. I merely place myself in front of certain customers whenever you indicate it necessary…though perhaps that is why you seem to be having such an enjoyable time of things.” Jamil replies, “Y-you’re reading too much into it… Hahaha. It’s just a surefire way to keep the more rowdy customers in check, so I’m just trying to play to our strengths…”

Malleus responds, “It’s quite all right. The fact remains I am unaccustomed to customer service and must rely on your judgment. By all means, deploy me as you see fit.”

Later in the event Jack says, “I saw these guys in my club practicing road bicycle racing. One of them accepted advice from the other on improving his form. He was acting all cheerful on the surface during training, but the moment he was alone, he started aggressively badmouthing the teammate who gave him constructive feedback.” (Jamil & Malleus: “I’ll bet.”)

Jack continues: “When I saw that, my first thought was what a spineless coward that guy was for talking behind his partner’s back. But when I saw the way he talked about doing whatever it took to win, I realized | was wrong. He wasn’t taking the guy’s advice because he was spineless. He was just using the guy to win. That’s how you guys operate too, right? You’re using each other, and it’s working out just fine.” 

Malleus says, “Coordinating smoothly despite differences in personal stances sounds like the very epitome of teamwork to me.” (Jack: “IT’S NOT TEAMWORK!”)

After hearing rumors of the terrifying things that Malleus is said to have been doing (but hasn’t been) Jamil says, “We may need to take measures to counteract this undeservedly fearsome reputation. Suppose you made some slight changes to the way you handle customers? Perhaps, ah, making yourself more approachable…”

Malleus goes into the school’s courtyard to practice using a shishimai puppet with his magic and Jamil seeks him out, asking if there is any way he can help. Malleus asks for Jamil’s critique, with the response he receives inspiring him and Sam later reporting, “Our foot traffic and sales are more than double what they were before the drop-off. I wasn’t sure you’d get there, but you lucked out big time!”

Malleus credits Jamil with coming up with the idea to offer miniature shishimai from the school store, while Jamil gives credit to Malleus, saying, “I wasn’t expecting them to take off the way they did. Your influence is what made those sales.”

Malleus and Jamil seem to get along well during the event, with Malleus going to Jamil for explanations of household items that he does not understand, Jamil patiently providing them, and both working well together during takoage battles.
