Jamil and Sebek

Jamil and Sebek meet for the first time when Sebek accidentally follows students into Scarabia after orientation, and Jamil is wary of him possibly being an assassin sent after Kalim. Sebek is not pleased about being treated with suspicion, but after confirming that Jamil is “something like” Kalim’s bodyguard his demeanor changes completely: “Then you are the same as me! Now I understand why you were so suspicious.”

Jamil says, “I think it would be better for you to get back to your dorm rather than stand around here waxing poetic on the duties of bodyguards,” and when Sebek replies, “Did I not tell you that I don’t know where my dorm is? I would not be here if I was capable of returning on my own,” Jamil responds, “Hopeless, this one. Utterly hopeless.”

When Scarabia’s students are too frightened of Malleus to escort Sebek to Scarabia, Kalim has Jamil take Sebek back himself (“If you won’t go, then I will”), and during their walk Sebek apologizes for reacting poorly to being “treated me like some miscreant.”

Sebek says, “That was imprudent of me. Now that I know what position you’re in, l understand completely! It was a natural reaction,” and Jamil replies, “Natural, you say… Kalim always laughs it off and says I worry too much,” but Sebek agrees with Jamil, saying, “It is an attendant’s duty to remain vigilant.Your discretion is admirable, really. You even immediately thought to verify my magical pen! I could learn a thing or two from you.” 

Jamil suggests he start by familiarizing himself with the campus, telling him that he can “only blame (his) own inattentiveness” for becoming separated from his group and he should have realized that he was in the wrong dorm much sooner. Sebek concedes that he “cannot argue with that” and worries over how he is to explain himself to Malleus and the others, but Jamil assurs him that they will not “fly into a rage over someone getting lost.”

After reaching a hallway Sebek says he can find his own way and Jamil replies, “Are you certain? Ah, excuse me. Old habits. You’re not a child. Of course you’ll be fine,” and Sebek thanks him for his kindness, saying, “Let us both do everything in our power to help our masters succeed this year!” (Jamil: Ugh… Finally done babysitting.”)

In a vignette where Sebek and Jamil are two members of a group that Crowley assembles to escort guests and carry desks and chairs from Ramshackle, Jamil instructs Sebek on how to arrange the furniture, saying, “It seems we all drew the short straw today.”

Jamil impresses Sebek with the precision that allows I’m to arrange chairs with magic rather than doing so by hand, and when Jamil confirms Sebek’s description of how Malleus won a spelldrive tournament the previous year Sebek is delighted, saying, “You’re rather discerning for a human!” (Jamil: “I did not say it to endear you to me!”)

Jamil promises to listen everything Sebek has to say about Malleus if they finish their task early, but afterwards he reflects, “I did not expect him to hold me to it.”

Jamil and Sebek are also in the same group during Glorious Masquerade, with Jamil saying, “I was worried when Sebek started arguing and insisting that he join Malleus’s group, But honestly, I’m glad he has a proper guard.”

Jamil and Riddle come together during the festival to tease Sebek about his embarrassment of not liking coffee, and at the conclusion of the event Sebek thanks Jamil and Ruggie for volunteering to stay behind and fight the flowers, saying, “I’m sure dispatching all those firelotuses was no mean feat for two humans like yourselves.”

Jamil responds, “We had to do it for all of you. It didn’t matter what happened to us, as long as we could draw them away” (Sebek: “Such dedication! You’re deserving of my respect!”), while Ruggie quietly says, “There’s no way we can tell any of ’em the truth. We managed to run all night by usin’ a buncha Noble Bell College students.”

Sebek declares that he and Silver will “heave (them) both into the air in honor of your exploits,” but they are interrupted by Grim.

After the group’s performance at the social Sebek demands that they share their impressions of Malleus’ singing, and Ruggie and Jamil once again sacrifice a Noble Bell College student to escape an uncomfortable situation, with Ruggie saying that he heard the student council vice president say that Malleus is unapproachable and Jamil following with, “Oh, yes. I believe I did hear him say that.”

During the Firelit Sky event, Jamil suggests that Malleus get tea for Sebek as a souvenir, as “Tea can have a calming effect.”

Jamil scolds Sebek after Skully’s capture, telling him he is “way too prone to desperate gambits” and needs to “come up with proper plans instead.” 

When Sebek declares that he deserves the credit for Skully’s capture Jamil responds, “That’s rich, coming from a guy who didn’t do anything but get rescued,” agreeing with Leona, who suggests that they tell Malleus about “the pitiful way (Sebek) was rollin’ around when he was a pumpkin.”

When Leona later points out that Sebek has not said “one word of gratitude so far, much less an apology,” Jamil joins him, saying, “It was maddening watching Sebek constantly run off ahead with reckless abandon. Yet he hasn’t said a word of thanks. I never knew Diasomnia had someone so rude in it,” goading Sebek into saying “…You have my thanks” in small font. (Jamil: “That was so quiet!”)

Jamil and Leona then team up again, teasing Sebek about looking more dependable with Zero beside him (Jamil: “You finally look like you belong in those clothes”). Sebek responds, “These two make everything so difficult…”

Sebek is Jamil’s interviewer for his second birthday vignette, giving him a “traveler’s essay collection” filled with notes from Lilia that include stories of his travels. Sebek says, “I wanted to share those insights with you, so l compiled them all on sticky notes.” Sebek also encourages Jamil to visit Briar Valley.

When Jamil explains why he would choose to take Jack with him to a deserted island Sebek says, “Essentially, you’d turn Jack into your maid for efficiency’s sake?,” but Jamil replies, “I prefer to call it giving the right job to the right person.”

Sebek says, “…It’s not easy to get others to follow your directions, though. I would never accept someone as my liege unless I wholeheartedly respected them,” and Jamil responds, “Oh, I absolutely agree.”

Upon meeting Skully for the first time both Jamil and Sebek restrain him with a binding spell “before (they) could even finish trading introductions,” with Jade observing, “I have to hand it to Sebek and Jamil for immediately restraining the threat the moment they grasped our situation.”

Jamil physically stops Epel from revealing where they have come from to Skully, with Sebek saying, “Don’t divulge personal details to some random stranger, you ninny! How can you be so trusting?,” with which Jamil agrees: “He’s right. Considering the situation we’re in, we should be pumping this guy for information, not volunteering our own—“ but he is interrupted by Grim volunteering his name (Jamil & Sebek: “COME ON!”).

When Jack Skellington encourages the group to follow him Sebek says, “Who would follow that skeleton? It’s beyond suspicious!,” and Jamil again agrees, saying, “I’m with Sebek on this. We should proceed with caution.”

Jamil carefully asks Jack if he and the other inhabitants of Halloweentown actually eat, and when Jack confirms “Of course we do” Jamil responds, “Ah… Of course, silly me. That’s what | get for scrutinizing it too deeply, I suppose…” but Sebek agrees with him, saying, “I fail to see what’s obvious about it. What could a skeleton possibly need to eat for?”
