Jamil and Silver

At the start of his third birthday vignette Jamil says that he hopes his interviewer will not be “someone prone to asking about private matters,” and when it is revealed to be Silver he follows with, “With you asking the questions, I’m sure things won’t get out of hand.”

When Floyd expresses interest in being able to use Silver’s unique magic Jamil says, “He’d probably use it to intrude into other people’s dreams and mess them up so badly they turn into nightmares. I for one am genuinely grateful it remains in the hands of someone as goodhearted as you, Silver.”

Jamil is Silver’s judge for the Master Chef course and, opening realizing who will be rating his food, Silver says, “You’re one of the leading culinary heavyweights on campus. Can I possibly overcome this level of opposition..?” (Jamil: “I have no idea what you’re talking about. I’Il just try the food, if it’s all the same to you.”)

Jamil rates the flavor of the stew Silver makes “typical,” but compliments how well the ingredients have been cooked, and especially the tenderness of the meat, saying, “I would’ve assumed you’d fall asleep doing something like that.”

Silver saying that he was allowed to use a pressure cooker and Jamil responds, “I’m surprised. I was under the impression that the Culinary Crucible was a program designed to hone participants’ practical skills. But I suppose they offer a leg up to students who have issues with technology or aptitude. I learned something new today. It’s hard for me to say how much of that was you versus the pressure cooker, but it was certainly acceptable as far as stews go.”

When Silver and Kalim are gives an extra potionology assignment by Crewel, Kalim tells Silver, “Why bother reading a textbook when we can get a rundown from Jamil way faster?,” running away to find Jamil before Silver is able to stop him. When Jamil arrives Silver apologizes (“I tried to stop him from roping you in”), but then falls asleep during Jamil’s tutoring (Kalim: “I think you talked too long there, Jamil. Aha ha!”).

Kalim decides to make a wake-up potion for Silver first, which Jamil also oversees the creation of, afterwards saying, “It’s a good thing you’re done, because tonight you’re going to be staying up and learning how to make the sleeping potion for your assignment,” and when they are both surprised he follows with, “How did I know these two airheads would completely forget what they were supposed to do?”

Kalim unilaterally volunteers to Jamil to help Silver again in another vignette (“Don’t try to get me to agree. You just dragged me over here”), though Jamil does try to provide advice to assist Silver with his problem.

Silver praises Jamil and Ruggie at the end of Glorious Masquerade, saying, “You showed incredible courage. I should learn from your examples,” to which Jamil responds, “By all means, do,” with Ruggie quietly commenting, “There’s no way we can tell any of ’em the truth. We managed to run all night by usin’ a buncha Noble Bell College students.”

Silver and Sebek decides to “heave (them) both into the air in honor of (their) exploits,” with Silver saying, “Lilia always says an aerial toss is the best way to honor bravery,” but they are interrupted by Grim.

Jamil and Silver are paired together during Spectral Soiree, with Jamil attacking ghosts for their fragments rather than following Silver’s idea of searching the canyon for their own. Silver cautions him with, “It’s not good to attack others at random,” saying that they should “hold onto” the fragments that the ghosts dropped for in case they reunite (Jamil: “Yes, I suppose we should”).

Jamil encourages Silver to tell a story he had been talking about, saying, “We’ll be covering each other’s backs for a while. I’d like to get to know you better,” but does not seem to be paying much attention, and is later to have been looking out for the ghosts who had fled from them earlier on.

Silver assures them, “You needn’t be scared. As long as you don’t attack us, we won’t attack you,” but Jamil interjects with, “Fork over those new fragments!,” revealing that he had known that they’d find more if he let them go, and, “Why search with just us two, when a whole band of ghosts can do the work for us? We’ll be taking those now.” 

Afterwards Silver says, “It’s wrong to take other people’s things,” unconvinced by Jamil assuring him, “Those ghosts were villains.” (Silver: “Just because they’re villains doesn’t mean it’s okay to rob them.” – Jamil: “Tch… So stubborn.”)

Jamil changes tactics, saying, “We’re not REALLY stealing. We’re all going to the Halloween party, right? We’ll surely see the ghosts there, so we can give the fragments back then. We’re just borrowing them in the meantime,” and when Silver is still hesitant he uses Silver’s devotion to Malleus to convince him, saying, “You DO want to save Malleus, don’t you? Then shouldn’t your priority be finding a way forward?”

Silver concludes, “Maybe the lesson there is that sometimes we have to make hard decisions for the greater good. Is that what you’re trying to tell me, Jamil?,” to which Jamil responds, “Huh? Oh, uh… Yes. Absolutely.”

Later on they meet with Jack, and Silver tells a story from his childhood where he off-handedly mentions fighting bears, surprising Jamil, but then they are interrupted by ghosts. After their battle Jamil says, “Tell us the rest of the story, Silver!,” and Silver responds, “Are you trying to get to know me better, like you were with the hero tale? You must think Jack won’t be comfortable working with us otherwise. Another example of Scarabian foresight… Your thoughtfulness has amazed me yet again.” (Jamil: “Yes, sure, whatever. Just keep going.”)

After scaring additional ghosts according to Jamil’s plan Silver again praises Jamil, saying, “This was a fantastic idea. Your ingenuity is quite impressive!,” and Jamil compliments Silver on his acting.

Silver seems to have respect for Jamil’s awareness, commenting on how Lilia’s scream—which only he had heard—must have meant Lilia had been “fighting someone skilled enough to evade Jamil’s notice.”

At the end of the event Silver presents Jamil to Lilia, saying, “Jamil stuck with me through thick and thin. He’s clearheaded and has a keen eye for detail. I relied on him so much during our journey.”

Jamil says, “You’re giving me a bit too much credit. I wasn’t exactly…” but Silver insists, saying, “Please don’t be modest. You amazed me so many times today.”

Jamil comments, “…Only because you never listen,” but then follows with, “I should thank you, actually. Your honesty and strength were a great boon to me today,” quietly saying, “You deserve to hear that much. I’d hate to leave myself in some kind of moral debt.”
